Leinster Senior Open
The Leinster Open took place 15-17 December 2017 at Fitzwilliam LTC.
With Ulster’s Steve Richardson and Gordon Harpur seeded at 1 and 2 respectively in the Mens A draw, there was availability for an all-Ulster final to repeat the success of the Connacht Senior Open in November. Unfortunately Harpur lost out to Junior, Conor Moran, in the quarter-finals (3-1), and with all other Ulster interest out in the first round, it was left for Richardson to set aside the Irish juniors (Denis Gilevskiy and Sam Buckley) in straight sets in each round to forge a route to the final alone. Richardson continued his form with a 3-0 win against Conor Moran in the final to take the title, his second in a month!
in the Ladies A section, our only Ulster interest was recent Irish Junior Open winner, Ellie McVeigh, seeded 4th. McVeigh made light work of her first round match against Sarah Corcoran but came up against stiff competition from number 1 seed, Sophie O’Rourke, in the semi-final. Despite a valiant effort and some great squash, McVeigh lost out 3-1 in the semi-final to the eventual winner, O’Rourke. She dusted herself off enough to make swift work of number 3 seed, Tamaki Marumo to take 3rd place instead. A great finish for an U17s player.
